Location and history
At only 10km from the south of the cape of Salines ( Mallorca ) you find the archipelago of Cabrera, declared a National Maritime Park on the 29th of April 1991. The archipelago of Cabrera is formed by a main island, Cabrera and 18 small islands and has a surface of 10.021,51 hectares. The National Maritime Park of the archipelago of Cabrera is made up of a succession of cliffs, coves, sandy beaches and beautiful caves. The most spectacular is the Sa Cova Blava, a cavewhich makes a great impression onthe visitor for its enigmatic composition of natural light and colour.
Its castle, built in the XIV century to prevent the island from being used as a base by the Bereber pirates, was used as a concentration camp for 9000 French prisioners after the battle of Bailén. Between 1809 and 1811 groups started to arrive at the island. According to the legend there also existed a monastery inhabited by rebellious monks who danced naked on the beach.
Currently there exist numerous hillwalking ways to visit the island by foot and enjoy this Natural Wonder which houses the Balearic archipelago.
