The plants of Christmas decorate Spanish homes and diaries and calendars are organized with dates, food and dinners with friends and family members. It is the time to share joy with family returning adult, with friends who we do not see them for long and other meetings with our loved ones.
But perhaps the most outstanding day during the Christmas holidays, for its significance and celebration options offered is the 31st of December: New Years Eve. It is the time to collect all the experiences of the year, to take stock of our aims achieved and to remember the happiness of our experiences.
Though considered the 31st of December a working day, people exceptionally tend to finish work before, this therefore gives the chance to go out with colleagues or with friends either to have some beers, to have some tapas or even to do the last minute shopping. Although the New Year´s Eve has been traditionally celebrated with family, over time Spaniards opt to celebrate this evening surrounded by friends.
In any New Year´s Eve celebration the lucky grapes may be missing: 12 grapes that are taken in time with the chimes of the clock indicating midnight and will give the start of a year of luck and prosperity. The last chime becomes an explosion of joy, shoot out corks from cava bottles, toasts, jokes, laughs, streamers, confetti, kisses, hugs and wishes of happiness for the new year. The environment we lived is fantastic: people go to the street with wigs, hats, masks… Cars fill the air with music and horns, in all the bars, hotels and restaurants there are parties and special shows to finish this day.
But the night just starts. With the first magic touch of the lucky grapes, people go out to bars, pubs or clubs where they dance until you drop. Spanish men and Spanish women choose outfits and hair styles which specially are smart for the occasion and the most superstitious ones choose underclothes in red colour to catch passion and love. Clubs usually offer appetizers, party favors and open bar, which means, you can drink all you want during the night. But, you should reserve your ticket in advance since in the New Year’s Eve many, many people go out.
Most New Year´s Eve revellers make the New Year´s Eve the longest night of the year ending this up with a breakfast of chocolate with churrros (Spanish pastry). Along with the tiredness accumulated, the funniest and cheerful anecdotes of the night are companied. A celebration of amusement, rejoicing, dances, joy, music and good environment. Everything positive flows and the magic of the grapes turn into a special celebration the first hours of the year and intame for both Spaniards and visitors.
